— Excuse me. Can I ask you something? It's Luke, isn't it?
— Luc. — Luke. — No, not Luke. Luc. — Luc. |
Do you want to ask me something or not?
— No. Forget it. — I forget already. — This is the thing. |
When we’re taking off and you said all that stuff, did you mean it or were you just trying to make me angry? Do I look like someone who doesn't know how to have a good time? — You were how old when you lost it? |
— It?
— What it? — You know. It, it. Your flower. — My flower? Oh. My flower is none of your business. |
— I ask you because, you know, some people, they-they rush toward the fateful moment, the body is bursting to discover. Others, they guard it like some precious gift, and they wait and wait.
— You, I suppose, rushed? — Like a bull. — Yeah. |
I have a picture in my mind. It’s very clear.
— A young bull. — How young? — 13. — 13! — No, you are right. I was 12. |
Magda. She was a putain. A prostitute. She lived just outside of my town. Just by a little bridge. She was not beautiful, but she had this mouth... |
Oh, there was another world waiting there. But I did not have the money for the kissing, only for the... you know.
— I don't understand. To kiss a prostitute, it costs more. It is always mean. — Oh, well. |
That makes sense. A kiss is so intimate. I mean, you could probably disconnect from everything else, but a kiss...Two people's lips together, their breath, a little bit of their soul. |
All I mean is that a kiss is where the romance is. –The very thing that is what I thought back then. So the next day, I stole 50 francs from my brother Antoine. |
I went back and kissed Magda for half an hour. It was very good.

Kate: Did you know that there are four hundred and fifty-two official government cheeses in this country? Don't you think that's incredible? To come up with four hundred and fifty-two ways of classifying what is basically a bacterial process?
Luc: You would prefer one cheese? One cheeseburger to put it on and one restaurant to eat it in? Kate: I'm saying I like the cheese. God! |
Kate: You know, all men are bastards.
Luc: Well, not all. I mean, some are just trying to help. Kate: You know, I never thought I'd be the kind of woman to say this, but it's true. All men are bastards. Luc: The guy who was talking to you, he was... Kate: A bastard. A Eurotrash-in-Armani kind of bastard. Luc: He was wearing a black suit? With a yellow shirt? Kate: Yeah. Kate: You know him? Luc: Come on. Kate: Of course you know him. All you bastards know each other. |
Kate: Do you believe in love? The kind that lasts forever?
Luc: I loved my mother. Kate: No, everybody loves their mother. Even people who hate their mothers love their mothers. The question is, one man meant for one woman. That is the question. Luc: But it is not an interesting question. It is the question of a little girl who believes in fairy tales. |
Luc: I like you. But I don't like the way you say with your face all scrunched up, «you're French, aren't you?» And then I don't like how you say, with your eyes all squinty, «all men are bastards.» |
[an announcement is made in French]
Kate: What was that? That sounded important. Luc: The pilot said there is a crack in the engine, but not to worry, he'll take off anyway. |

Based on her life experience the main character of the movie Kate believed that all men were bastards. Do you think she was right or wrong?
Cool episode, real life situation:) I mean the way of conversation,
Thanks
It's a wrong position, I think. Not all, just part of them
It's a problem of the most of women — to fall in love with bad guys that steal our hearts and don't value it.
But, you know, some women choose such bad boys consciously because good men are often sooo boring! And with bastards they have emotions, feel they live.
It's a psychology, something like forbidden fruit, person that will never be fully yours. It's an interesting exciting game that you are going to lose.
And good guys... I don't know. Nothing can be good, we always think so and look for a trick. But solution of this problem is really easy — just to understand that we deserve good guys, there are no tricks and they really exist!
I can't share her view, not all and not just a part of them. You can think in that way about any other person regardless of his gender. If someone hurts you, you'd think he is probably bad guy or if someone do things for you and he seems to be nice you'd think he's a good person. But you could be wrong. It would cost a lot of bitter experience before you can tell the one from another, i mean, pals from totally bad guys and guys who just want to seem bad))

Thank you, a very good post!
I think Kate was wrong.
She was so suffused with emotions of the possible break up with her groom and therefore she just couldn't be objective in her opinion.
Coming up with the idea that the guy who betrayed you is a bastard, she just extrapolated this point of view to all men.
But it's just a matter of fact that if Kate just let herself not to be driven by her emotions and simply had a rest instead of following Charly she probably could bear this break up easier.
A chance encounter with Luc only reiforces her false conviction in total bastardness of men. His provocative manner of speaking, relaxed tone and frivolous views were interpreted as an additional argument to her opinion.
As for me, I think we cannot judge others and mark them as bastards and non-bastards. There are different ways to find the truth behind each of this statements.
The most important thing is the trust. When you fall in love with someone your vision is blinded by sense of inspiraton, and you cannot be objective. Betrayal while being in love hurts more than being out of love.
And if you trust someone without idealizing him, just taking him as he is — that's the way to evade wrong conclusions and broken hearts. You will be happy even if your beloved changes his heart and falls in love with someone else. Simply knowing that he (or she) is alright, this will make you feel better.

One of the best comments so far, thank you!
I consider that Кейт acted correctly. Me it seems to that she felt treachery of Charley and decided simply to check true it or no. Therefore she started to fly to Paris. It superfluous time proves us that Кейт very loved Charley and ready for the sake of him on everything. Even to overcome the fears and сести in an airplane. She did not know that in an airplane will meet the love. Here so and this history made off with a счасливым end. Кейт and Charley met the love.
A film very pleased me. I very love romanticism. And I romantic. Thank you very much to you for a film he very interesting.
Not all men are bastards as well as women. Each person in her or his life meet bad people. They ruined our hearts and souls maybe to show their individuality, who khows?
We used to judge all peoples when you hurt somebody-that is wrong possition. I can't say how many people including men in my life were bad and good, because they have changed. Some of them were good and then became real bastards or something like that.So I thing we must look around very carefully and choose only those people who deserve us!
On the one hand she's right, because it's her life experience, but the other woman can have the opposite experience and she will right to say that all men are noble princes. Everything is so relatively...
Our life not black-and-white. The same person for the different people can be both bad or good. As usual the truth is somewhere in the middle. I think that we need believe in the best but not wishful thinking.
I'm glad that main character changed her opinion in the end of this movie and found her happiness!
It is likely that only a woman signed for the course?
I am interested in how men would answer that question. Do you remember the Soviet film «Big Break»? In this film, one of the main characters had to write an essay about himself, whether he is a good friend.
As a reply in essence ... I don't believe that all men are bastards. It would be sad. Unfortunately, there are bastards (both women and men), but we should not generalize. I hope that the girls who think this way, will meet their loved one and change the point of view.
To my previous post: I just noticed. Alexander (13:21) has written a very good tip!
To: Aleksandra
I have also noticed that
Thank you, Marat and Aleksandra for appreciating
I have never seen this film before, but I really liked this episod. It was so funny)
To answer the question? I think all (exept my father) men are bastards, though some of them are better at hiding it.
Actually, you start thinking that all men a bustards only after you were hurt by one of them. For instance, a woman is dating with a man. They have a good time. They are in love. The moment comes and she decides to give him her flower, the thing that she guarded like some precious gift. He rushes toward the fateful moment. He is bursting to discover… Then it happens that he meets another girl. He is a bustard for his previous girl-friend. More over, all men are bustards for her. However time flies and she, as well, meets a man. She is in love again and her “all men are bustards” is ruined. The thing is that we should believe only in positive traits of people.

That was a great example how one should use newly learned words...I really enjoyed your post, thank you!
I have not seen this film (it makes sense to look into the future, because I love comedy.)
Kate's not right, she's just angry at her a Eurotrash-in-Armani kind of bastard. Every person is complicated, can not bear. But so interesting! You live like on volcano, do not know there will be another day or you will end. And if there are angels all near, it means you need something urgently to change in your life, there are not happiness and completeness in it.
hm... Another interesting question)
All I can say that Kate is right and she is wrong at the same time. It's easy.
Let's have a picture. All of us want to love and to be loved, all of us want to have a good time, all of us want faithfull and the only second half. Yes, everyone in this world is unique and deserves only the best, but... One has his own desires and values. We all want to find happiness, but sometimes we forget that it's not so easy. We have good and bad sides too. In our rush to find real love we always hurt someone, not matter man or woman you are. And than a man becomes a bastard and a woman becomes a bitch.
In my opinion, it's a cruel true of life and we can't avoid it...

Thank you, a very good post!
It's one of my favourite films. And what about question? Frankly speaking I sometimes believe like Kate that all men are bastards. But I think that each woman can meet a man who changes such opinion.
